The Best of Summer in Midtown

The skyrise nature of Midtown does not get in the way of summer pleasures, thanks to one of the world’s most successful expressions of the live-work-play concept known among architects by the unromantic name, “mixed-use community.” Midtown is blessed with streetscapes designed for human enjoyment, bike-friendly routes that are laid-out and monitored scientifically, outdoor plazas and vest-pocket parks where people have lunch, listen to music, say Hi to neighbors who also dwell in the nearby condos, talk business, and fall in love, all in the shade of trees. Lots and lots of trees.

Atlantic Station recently unveiled the new Atlantic Green, dedicated to doubling the green space open there for enjoyment, and creating a pleasant pedestrian channel from its 17th Street corridor to the luxurious Regal Cinema, with the welcoming sights and sounds of two fountains. Opening soon to add further to the dining and entertainment variety there, HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern is expected, followed by 4,000-square-foot Mexican restaurant with rooftop patio, Azotea Cantina. A third new restaurant is expected to join the Atlantic Station array, too, known as envegan.

For many, Atlantic Station is their epicenter for this kind of summer enjoyment. The sheer convenience that is built into the selection of restaurants and pubs and shops and entertainment there makes it very tempting to stay close to home, even now. And nearby, when you get beyond the charm, the big necessities of life are close-at-hand this summer, too, like a Target and an Ikea. So convenience is certainly one of the things we enjoy here in Midtown, in summer or any season.

Dining Alfresco

It was always one of our favorite ways to enjoy summer here, and lately enjoying meals and relaxation outdoors is even more popular, as our faithful restaurants and pubs sort carefully through the sensible precautions of today.

A patio and waterfall make Terra Terroir a favorite, and they plan to reopen them soon, so keep an eye on “TT,” while they offer pickup or delivery seven nights a week. Another strong option is the outdoor seating 26 Thai Kitchen.

Events Will Happen

Examples of summer outdoor events that can proceed with sensible precautions include Wellness Wednesdays on the Green, which begin at 6:30 p.m. at Atlantic Station. Wine lovers who own a Hawaiian shirt – and those who don’t too – will be glad to hear that the Waikiki Wine Stroll is ON for July 25, with food and drink discounts, shopping specials, free samples and swag all over Atlantic Station. And all to the accompaniment of Hawaiian music. Go figure.

How This Got So Good

Architects and planners all over the world have espoused the wisdom of “mixed use” communities, where people can live and work and play without spending so much of their lives just “getting there.” While they were theorizing, Midtown Atlanta was building, guided by a master plan – or more accurately a master planning process – called Blueprint Midtown. The overriding goal of “BPM” is simply this: to ensure that Midtown gets even better as it grows, for those who live here now, and for those who will come with the dynamic progress of the next three decades.

What we can enjoy now, the best of summer in Midtown, and what we can be confident of seeing in the future, too, is why luxury condos such as those of the Atlantic flourish in Midtown.
