Digging the Modern: Quarry Yards Rising
Even in its first phase, the project known as Quarry Yards will be a $400 million investment in the obvious future that is west of Midtown. The offices, residences, retail, restaurants, and hotel we’ll see there are coming with a design principle that’s the best of what’s called Modern. In brick, concrete, metal, and glass, Quarry Yards will be grounded in the industrial past of the site, while offering the clearest of clean breaks from it visually, and harmonizing with the best of recent design in the condos for sale in Midtown Atlanta.
The location has every advantage of access, from MARTA – the Bankhead station – to motoring along Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, to pedestrian. It will connect with the 400-acre multi-purpose trail, the Proctor Creek Greenway, that will flow from Maddox Park all the way to the Chattahoochee River along the Beltline Westside Trail.
Discovering the Near
The dimensions of opportunity that surround the site of the old Bellwood Quarry were discovered in a birds-eye view. From a helicopter, an urban planner pointed out that the turquoise waters of the quarry were, “in sneezing distance of Peachtree Street.”
Out of that observation came plans for the Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry, where trails will converge on meadows of playgrounds and sports fields, recreation space and facilities, all boding well for the value of the condos at Atlantic Station, among many another Midtown and West Midtown Atlanta condos.
Capacity and Convenience
Within phase one of Quarry Yards, 27 acres will be devoted to the kind of development that’s technically called mixed-use, but which really is the state of the art for urban living. Class A office space will amount to 575,000 square feet. There will be 75,000 square feet of retail shops and restaurants, a 300-key hotel, and 850 residential units. Together, they offer the possibilities that come from a life of more enjoyment and less driving.
With construction slated to begin by the end of the year, Quarry Yards will soon be taking its place among the excellent examples of how Atlanta continually makes the visionary practical.
